Week of August 4

Greetings! I get to attend the Engaged Classroom training this week and we will have a substitute, Mrs. Payne, Tuesday through Friday.

HOMEBASE

The big push this week is on getting our planners signed and getting our home reading minutes logged. Between LAST Friday and this Friday morning students should have at least 5 sets of reading minutes/parent initials for a total of 100+ reading minutes. This puts us at a total of 180+ reading minutes for the first two weeks of school. We are aiming for 300 minutes by August 15th.

We are also working in class on our Monitored Independent Reading logs. Last week's were fairly disappointing and I don't feel they were a good representation of what the students are capable of. Mrs. Payne and myself will be modeling how to correctly complete the log. These are due Fridays.

A TRACK/B TRACK/C TRACK MATH

This week we are reviewing addition strategies, skills and concepts.

Monday: Problem of the Day. Concept mapping. HW: Discuss and have parent initial your concept map.

Thursday: Problem of the Day. Review of the week. HW: Leave a comment on the blog which includes the following: three things that you have learned this week, your initials and track. You MUST post a comment on the blog by TUESDAY 8/12. If you do not have internet access at home, I will accept a written comment.

Friday: "Housekeeping" and Math Art (due next Friday).

Mrs. Buttars,
what we learned last week was

example: bridging ten is giving 10+10 or 10+9 and etc. The second example is we did doubles, plus, or minus. Thats where we took a number and doubled it like 64+73=_______ We also worked on our addition ( we worked on a math sheet.) Then we did doubles thats also where we did 93+42 and it got the number. We ALSO did counting on. Thats where we took a number and just kept counting on. So lets say we took 53+87... that would keep on going up.

So that's what we learned!

1. we learned about adding doubles, here's an example.
5+5=? ,4+4=? ,7+7=?
2. we learned about doubles plus or minus this is an example.
5+(3-2)=?, 5+(5+2)=?
3. we also learned about counting on, we've also got another example for that to.
7+2=? 7... 8,9
4. we also learned bridging 10.
9+8=?
10+7=?...............17

1. We learned new math strategies like: counting on, doubles, doubles plus or minus and bridging 10. Examples: counting on: 5+2, 6+1, 7+2, 8+1 and 9+2. Doubles: 5+5, 2+2, 7+7, 3+3, 6+6, 4+4, 1+1, 8+8, and 9+9. Doubles plus or minus: 8+6, 5+7, 7+6, and 6+5. Bridging 10: 8+9, 7+9, 6+9, 5+9, 4+9, 3+9, 2+9, and 1+9.
2. We did math timings and they got higher.
3. We learned how to add up to 15 faster instead of taking a long time we found out how to take short cuts by playing tic tac toe.

1. We learned how to count on. Counting on is when you use any number and you line them up in a straight line and keep on counting those numbers.
7
8
9
10
+11
______

2. Bridging ten is when you have an odd number and you turn the odd number into a even number.
87 90
+76 +73
______ _____
163 163

3. Doubles is when two numbers are the same and you add them together.
5+5=10

Last week with Mrs. Payne, we learned about a few math strategies to make addition easier. Here's three of them:
1. Adding Doubles: Doubles is just like multiplication. Multiplication is a lot faster than adding.
For example: 7+7= 14 = 7 x 2= 14.
2. Counting on: You use this math strategy when you need to add a fairly small number to another number by counting on from the bigger number until you've counted the number of numbers of the smaller number from the larger number.
For example: 8+3
8 (9, 10, 11)
3. Bridging 10: This strategy is used when you have a number fairly close to the next ten. You take enough numbers from the other numeral to make the other number reach the next ten. Then you add them together.
For example: 64+39=
64 39
- 1 + 1
63 + 40 = 103

1.We learn about doubles Plus/Minus. Like say we did 29+45,we would Plus one to 29 to make it 30.We would minus one from 45 to make it 44 then add it. So 30+44=74
2.We learn about doubles. All you do is plus two of the same numbers, like 32+32=64
3.We did counting on. Like take 25+6 then just do 25,26,27,28,29,30,31.

1. Last weak we learned how to bridging ten.
2. For example let s say that you have a math problome and its 9+4 and to make it easier we can just subtract one from four and add 1 to the nine and then it makes it more easier.
3.We also did a paper explaining addition like how to use it when to use it the symbols and i think that it really helped cause when you write stuff down it helps you remember better and saying all that stuff like how to when to really helped.
a mi me ayudo entenderlo por que es mas facil citandole uno a un numero y poniendose en otro numero para ecerlo mas facil .

1.We learned doubles here is an example 5+5
doubles are where you add to of the same numbers.
2.We also learned doubles plus and mines here is an example 5+7
3.We also learned that when you add a number like 27+9 you count on counting on is where you keep on counting on by 1

Last week we learned about couting on. It is when you add 1 or 2s like 9+1.
We also learned about doubles it is when your add double numbers like 2+2.
the last thing we learned about bridging 10 its when if you are adding 9s just turn it to a 10 the add it and then subbtract 1 then you got your answer
9+8 10+8=18-1=17
